Support for children with Special Educational Needs
The Local Authority has a range of specialist services to support pupils, schools and parents.
Most children with Special Educational Needs will not require a Statutory Assessment or
a statement in order to receive the support they need in school. All schools in Cardiff
receive funding from the Local Authority for Special Educational Needs and they can also
ask for advice and support from a range of specialist services. This includes the Educational Psychology Service, Behaviour Support Team, Learning Intervention Team, Sensory and Communication Team and the Autism Support Team.
Parents who are concerned about their child’s progress at school should initially discuss their worries with the Headteacher and the Special Needs Co-ordinator of the school.
Some pupils with very significant and complex needs may need a Statement of Special
Educational Needs, especially if they may need to attend a Special School or Specialist
Resource Base. A referral to the Casework Team will be made to consider whether a Statutory Assessment is needed.
