Inclusive Play Project and play provision for disabled children

Some schemes are open access for all children others are for children with specific needs only and may require a referal

The Inclusive Play Project is part of the Children’s Play Services Section of Sports, Leisure, Culture & Play. The service is provided to enable disabled children/ young people (aged 5 – 14), resident in Cardiff, to attend play facilities in their local community.

The Project provides the following services:

  • An opportunity for disabled children to be included in play in their local community.
  • Advice, information, support and training for staff and volunteers working with the children / young people.
  • The Disabled Children’s Play Co-ordinator bridges the gap between the child and play provision.
  • Home and School links for new referrals from Social Workers/key workers with Disabled Children’s Play Co-ordinator.
  • The Project liaises with Voluntary and Statutory agencies, which provide volunteers to support the programme.
  • Maintain a register of children that attend. All referrals come through the Social Services /Health Visitors key workers.
  • Provides information and advice to any children and young person/ parent /carer as to the most suitable provision in their area.
  • Provides additional resources for the provision to enable children / young peopleto attend:-
    • After school clubs (5 – 14’s) term time
    • 7 Play Centres(5 – 14’s) after school interm times, and during the day times in holidays across Cardiff in Adamsdown, Ely, Grangetown, Llanederyn, Llanrumney, Riverside and Splott.
    • Holiday SPICE Play Care (5 – 14’s) all holiday periods (excluding Christmas) and Spice after school Play Care in Llanishen High School.
    • Voluntary organisations’ plays schemes.
    • Holiday play schemes (excludingChristmas).
  • Information leaflets about our service are available from all Play Centres, SPICE and Play Services.

Disabled Children Assisted Childcare Places 5 –14 years

Children’s Play Services work closely with Childcare Business Support Team who allocate funding from the Welsh Government’s Out of School Childcare Grant to Children’s Play Services to manage the Assisted Childcare Places Scheme. 

This partnership is offered to Disabled Children who’s Parent/Carers work or are in full-time Education. The support given to these Parents/Carers are that their Disabled Child would have one to one support in any childcare provision of their choice. 

Each Disabled Child is offered 10 hours per week before/after school in term times and 20 hours per week in the Half Terms and Holidays and Parents/Carers pay for the Childcare. 

Disabled Children and Young People can be and are referred by Special Needs Health Visitors, Social Workers, Teachers, Disability Team around the Family Teams and other professionals.
