Universal Credit
Universal credit is a new benefit that will replace current means-tested benefits such as Housing Benefit, Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support and Tax Credits for working-age people. This will be gradually introduced between October 2013 and 2017. It is expected that most claimants will apply on-line and the benefit will be paid direct to the claimant, monthly in arrears.
Further information about Universal Credit
Universal Credit
Universal Credit is a new payment for working-age people whether they are in or out of work. It combines some of the benefits and tax credits that a person may be getting. It will not affect people of pension age.
Universal Credit Full Service will be rolled out in Cardiff on 28 February 2018.
Universal Credit is a single monthly payment that will replace the six means tested benefits below:
- Income Support
- Income based Job Seekers Allowance
- Income Related Employment & Support Allowance
- Working Tax Credits
- Child Tax Credits
- Housing Benefit
There are four key changes to which claimants will need to adapt:
- A single monthly payment to the household
- Paid monthly in arrears
- Universal Credit Housing Cost Element (help for rent) paid directly to the claimant not the Landlord
- Claims to be made and maintained online.
- Paid into a bank account
- Payments may be reduced or stopped through sanction
From 28th February, new claims and change of circumstances will be accepted for households with less than 3 children.
From 1 February 2019, new claims and changes of circumstances will be accepted for households with 3 or more children.
From July 2019, large scale migration of remaining claims to Universal Credit will take place.
