Vale of Glamorgan Flying Start

Flying Start is a Welsh Assembly Government programme for children up to their fourth
birthday. Within the Vale, the designated areas are the catchment areas of Oakfield, Cadoxton and Jenner Park Primary Schools.

The main aim of Flying Start is to improve a child’s development, health and well being in
preparation for school.

The services offered include:

  • Free, quality, part time childcare for all 2 – 3 year olds living in the designated catchment areas. This will be offered by specified Playgroups, Day care nurseries, child minders and in the medium of both English and Welsh.
  • Health Visiting and Midwifery Services. The Speech and Language Therapist and Dietician will encourage good speech and language development as well as healthy eating from an early age.
  • Parenting programmes. These may either be received through small groups or in the home.
  • Improving a child’s development through Play. This will be offered one to one in the family home but also in groups.

Flying Start works both in the family home and in the community.

The Flying Start Family Centre is based in Gladstone Road Barry. The centre also hosts
Health Clinics, parenting groups, language and play. It is open from 8.30 am until 5 pm five days per week.
