Healthcare for Adults

Every adult with a learning disability has the same right of access to generic health services as anybody else, and the Cardiff Learning Disability Team or Vale Community Support Team can help to support access.

GP’s are increasingly acting as the primary core of the health service, as they are able to refer people to any appropriate service.

Specialist health services, such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy,
clinical psychology and community nursing are provided mainly through the Cardiff
Learning Disability Team or Vale Community Support Team by Abertawe Bro Morgannwg (ABM) University Health Board Directorate of Learning Disability Services.

Your local GP should offer an annual healthcare check for your son or daughter, if not then ask them where that can go for this- it is funded by Welsh government and is especially important since many individuals may not seek other screening or health advice.

If your relative need to go to hospital then staff and healthcare professionals need to know how to best support them.  All NHS facilities should be families with the 1000 Lives guidance that helps staff to be confident in listening to and treating your son or daughter  in the most beneficial manner.
